An entry-way bench providing space to sit, drop your valuables, and hang your coat.
Entry Bench aims to create a distinct moment of limbo between private and public life to allow the user to shed their belongings attached to public life, and to be fully present in their private affairs.
The vertical plank allows you to easily hang your layers, while the bench provides ample space for your handheld items and space to store your shoes below.
“How can we elevate the home?”
A big question, but one that guided a quickly developing string of observations. In 2022, in the shadow of the peak of the pandemic, we began coming to terms with effects of lock down—one being the disappearance of private life. With everyone being home, we welcomed formerly outside of the house activities in. We worked at home, worked out at home, and had digital social hours over the phone at home. And in some ways, lost the sacredness of the home.
How could I restore a separation between these two modes of living to allow the user to be more present in each?
Facilitating a greater moment of pause between the states of Home and Away could promote a more present state in each.
This moment of limbo is often defined by collecting or shedding items specific to each environment. Whether you are shedding your jacket and dropping your keys or changing your sneakers to slippers, there is an opportunity for a central hub to do it all. Unifying these actions could be a more potent illustration of a transformation into a new state as opposed to a continuation from the last.
